If your project is too big for a 20 yard dumpster but you’re not sure if a 30 or 40 yard is the right call, this is the post for you. I rent both sizes out of Round Rock every week, and most of the time I can tell you which one fits your job in about 30 seconds.
Here’s how to pick without wasting money.
The Real Difference in Capacity
Both dumpsters are 22 feet long and 8 feet wide. The only difference is height — and that adds up fast.
- 30 yard dumpster: 6 feet tall. Holds about 9 pickup truck loads of debris.
- 40 yard dumpster: 8 feet tall. Holds about 12 pickup truck loads.
That extra 2 feet of height = 33% more capacity. But weight limits don’t usually go up at the same rate, so the 40 yard is best for light, bulky material — not heavy stuff.
When a 30 Yard is the Right Call
Pick a 30 yard if your project looks like:
- Full kitchen and bathroom remodel
- Whole-house cleanout (3-bedroom house)
- Roofing job up to 4,000 sq ft
- New deck or addition demo
- Mid-size commercial cleanout
- Construction debris where some of it is heavy (tile, drywall, lumber mix)
The 30 yard is the sweet spot for most Round Rock remodels. It fits in standard driveways, it’s tall enough to clear loading, and it doesn’t usually trigger weight overages.
When You Actually Need a 40 Yard
The 40 yard makes sense when your project is:
- Whole-house cleanout of a 4+ bedroom house with garage and attic
- Large new construction debris (lumber, insulation, siding scraps)
- Big commercial cleanouts (warehouse, restaurant gut)
- Roofing on a 5,000+ sq ft building
- Multi-room demolition where the debris is mostly drywall, wood, and insulation
Key rule: only pick a 40 yard if your debris is light and bulky. If you’ve got concrete, tile, or shingles, that 40 yard fills up by weight before it fills up by volume. You’ll pay overage fees on a dumpster that looks half full.
Price Difference in Round Rock
Typical price spread in our area:
- 30 yard: $550 – $700
- 40 yard: $650 – $850
So you’re paying $100–$200 more for the 40. If you actually fill it, that’s a great deal — you avoid the cost of ordering a second 30. If you don’t fill it, you wasted money.
The Driveway Check
Both dumpsters need about 60 feet of straight clearance for the truck to drop them. The 40 yard is taller, so check for low branches and power lines. If your driveway has a roof overhang under 12 feet, the 40 won’t work — go with the 30.
Standard Round Rock driveway with no overhang? Either size works.
What I Tell Round Rock Customers
Most calls go like this: customer wants a 40 because “bigger is safer.” I ask what’s going in it. If they say concrete or tile, I push them to a 30 (or a 20 for heavy debris). If they say drywall, lumber, and household junk, the 40 might save them money.
Wrong-size dumpsters cost real money. Talking to a human for 5 minutes before you order saves you that money.
